Windows cannot open AVI files?

AVI stands for Audio Video Interleave file. These files are easily compressed with any codec type in the compression standard. Such file extension can be viewed with QuickTime or RealPlayer, which are available for Windows and Mac too. Although AVI files are stored and also used in the Resource Interchange File Format (RIFF), they are more commonly used for audio and video data found on a computer. Multimedia content is compressed using a codec and is stored in AVI format. For it to be played using Windows Media Player, the appropriate codec needs to be installed on the computer. The video codecs that are most frequently used in AVI files consist of the DivX codec, Cinepak codec and Indeo codec.
